LANZAROTE SPANISH ISLAND

The Spanish Island of Lanzarote is part of the Canary Islands. This island is the eastern most islands in this group of islands. The Canary Islands are situated in the Atlantic Ocean. Lanzarote is about 125 kilometers off the coast of Africa. In addition to this, the island is also about 1000 kilometers from the Iberian Peninsula. This island is the fourth largest island among the Canary Islands on account of its size. This island has an area of over 840 square kilometers. The island’s name translates as the red mountains in the native language.

GEOGRAPHY AND GEOLOGY OF LANZAROTE

the island of Lanzarote is situated about 11 kilometers north-east of Fuerteventura. The island is about 60 kilometers in length. This length is measured along the north-south direction. The width of the island is about 25 kilometers. This width is measured in the east-west direction. Another amazing feature of Lanzarote Island is the length of its coastline. This coastline is just a little less than 215 kilometers in length. About 16 kilometers of this coastline are beaches and another 10 kilometers are sand. Sadly though, the rest of the coastline is completely rocky. The landscape of this island is also very varied. There are two mountain ranges and a small desert in the southern part of the island. The tallest mountain on the island has an elevation of about 670 meters above the sea level. The island of Lanzarote has a volcanic origin. This is because the island was born out of the solidification of lava streams which were themselves a result of huge fiery eruptions. This island is said to be about 35 million years old. FLORA AND FAUNA

This Island has a huge variety of flora and fauna living on it. The island is said to have close to five hundred different kinds of lichen and plants on it. The lichens mostly grow in areas suitable for them such as rocks. The plants on this island are well adapted to the unavailability and scarcity of water.
